New SAO of the Kingdom of Denmark

The Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Kingdom of Denmark, Mr Villy Søvndal, has on January 16 2012 appointed an Arctic Ambassador, Mr Klavs A. Holm. The primary objective of the Ambassador’s task is to coordinate activities related to the implementation of the ‘Arctic Strategy of the Kingdom of Denmark’ and safeguard the interest of the Kingdom.
Ambassador Klavs A. Holm (born in 1953) has been part of the Foreign Service since 1980 and has been posted in Paris, London and Brussels. In 2005 he was appointed Ambassador in Singapore and in 2007 Ambassador Holm returned to Copenhagen to develop and lead the department of Public Diplomacy. Ambassador Holm will undertake the responsibility of the implementation of the ‘Arctic Strategy of the Kingdom of Denmark’ and is also be appointed Senior Arctic Official to the Arctic Council.
The Danish Minister for foreign Affairs, Villy Søvndal states: “With the vast changes, challenges and opportunities seen in the Arctic today all three parts of the Kingdom of Denmark have found it imperative to accommodate these in unison. Our joint ‘Arctic Strategy of the Kingdom of Denmark’ and the appointment of Ambassador Klavs A. Holm is a sign hereof”.
The Premier of Greenland, Mr. Kuupik Kleist, states: “Greenland and the Arctic is in a tremendous development. The strategic sense of the Arctic cannot be underestimated and I see the appointment of Ambassador Holm as a strengthening of our engagement in the Arctic of which I am happy”.
The Prime Minster of the Faroese Government, Mr. Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen, also states that “…the Faroese Government is happy that the Kingdom of Denmark reiterates its commitment in the Arctic by the appointment of an Arctic Ambassador“.
