Shipping activity in the Arctic is on the rise, including tourism and exploration activities, necessitating the need for reliable communication and monitoring.
As recommended in the 2009 Arctic Marine Shipment Assessment published on behalf of the Arctic Council, increasing shipping activities in the Arctic necessitate access to reliable communication and monitoring systems. This and other AMSA recommendations are currently being followed up within the Arctic Council.
As an additional result, the European Space Agency's Telecommunications Programme (ARTES) element 1 initiated a new study, ArtiCom. This study will identify gaps and map future demand for communication in the Arctic for the years 2015-2020 and beyond.
The ArtiCom study is described in more detail on the ESA website
