The Deputy Ministers' Meeting under the Swedish Chairmanship takes place next week on Tuesday 15 May. The venue is the "Spegelsalen" of the Grand Hotel in downtown Stockholm. Approximately 100 delegates are expected to attend.

The Arctic Contaminants Action Program (ACAP) working group made the transition from Russian to Finnish Chairmanship following the SAO meeting in Stockholm at the end of March.The new Chair of the working group is Mr. Jaakko Henttonen. Henttonen has a degree in Water and Sanitary Engineering and has held a variety of civil engineering positions in the past. He has also worked on environmental affairs and banking. Currently he works for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) as the Manager of the Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership Support Fund. Mr. Henttonen has also worked with ACAP previously as the Chair of the Project Steering Group (PSG) for Obsolete Pesticides from 2003-2006.

On Monday April 23 The Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) working group hosted a media event to present the updated version of the Arctic Species Trend Index (ASTI) to journalists attending the conference.

The final International Polar Year (IPY) conference will be held in Montréal, Canada April 22-27. Over 2,500 participants are expected. Attendees include Arctic and Antarctic researchers, academics, policy-makers, industry representatives, non-governmental organizations and inhabitants of circumpolar communities.
